Rangers Rock On – QPR 3 Ipswich 0

It’s high ho silver lining at Loftus  Road at the moment as Rangers rock on having recorded their fifth win in six home matches, rising to a season’s high of eight position in the Sky Bet Championship.

Luke Freeman conducted matters from the left of midfield and he set the tone early on with a whipped free kick that was tipped over. His set piece deliveries caused Ipswich problems all afternoon, none more so than in the 34th minute when a delicious curling free kick was met by the head of Joel Lynch for Rangers second goal.

This followed Rangers opener just four minutes earlier when the Town keeper Dean Gerken could only parry a Nahki Wells piledriver into the path of the onrushing Pawel Wszolek. A very poor goal for Ipswich to concede, firstly by carelessly giving the ball to Wells in space in the middle of the park and secondly by Gerken not pushing the ball to safety.

2-0 in double time and that was effectively that. Rangers did not need to up the tempo thereafter, albeit a deft turn, shuffle and curled left footed finish from Wells in the second half added the gloss.

The Rangers beat is getting louder as they close in on the play off places and, it is not inconceivable that they could scale the heights into such a rarefied position if they can do a number on Reading on Saturday.

A drum roll for manager Steve McClaren, who must be applauded for turning round Rangers fortunes after four straight defeats at the beginning of his reign. He is calling the tune and his players are responding. Consistency of selection is key and, as a result, the team are playing in harmony.

Alas for Ipswich, they are scratching around at the foot of  the table and are really feeling the blues. For all their possession, they lacked rhythm and pace and rarely hit the right note. Chelsea loanee Trevoh Chalobah, with his two tone hair style, was playing on a different wavelength to his team mates and there is more than a feeling that new Ipswich boss, Paul Lambert will have to dip into the loan market again for some more quality if his side are to escape relegation.

In the meantime, Rangers are banging the drum again with their third straight victory following particularly impressive victories over both Middlesbrough and away at Nottingham Forest. Whilst the rest of the teams towards the top of the Championship will not be turning their heads yet, the decibels are rising.
